Dog Training Fundamentals

One of the most important concepts in Dog Training is stimulus control. This concept refers to the idea of giving a consistent command to a dog. Unlike humans, dogs have a much higher learning curve than we do, and they can recognize a certain command after a few repetitions. Here are some ways to make training easy on your dog. Follow the instructions carefully! And if you have a busy schedule, you can use a virtual training class to make it easier to keep your dog on task. First, remember that dogs learn through experience. They are able to associate YES with a specific behavior, and therefore will respond accordingly. This is especially important during the first few sessions of training, when you must avoid getting overly excited. Instead, try to use a marker word, such as “Yes,” to encourage your dog’s desired behavior. This will keep your dog’s attention, and prevent your training sessions from turning into a charade.

Second, try to make sure your dog is rewarded each time its belly touches the ground. If the dog is rewarded immediately, it will understand that it was rewarded for staying down. If your dog is slow, he may take more time to get down. Lastly, you can use “screwup” cookies to reward your dog for trying. This way, your dog will know that you are rewarding him for trying, which is an important step in training your dog.

Third, the most common mistake new owners make is rewarding unwanted behavior only when you ask for it. Instead of rewarding a dog for doing something wrong, reward it for doing something good. If your dog performs the behavior every time you ask for it, then you should add a stimulus control reward to his training. However, most new trainers overlook this important part of stimulus control, and end up confusing their dog by dropping the signal. The reward should always be a positive reinforcement, and never a punishment.

Fourth, use random rewards when chaining or linking behaviors. When you want to reward a behavior, use a word or gesture like “good” or “yes.” This way, your dog will associate the word with the behavior and thus be more likely to repeat it. Moreover, the word or sound associated with the action will make it easier to remember the behavior. It’s also better to use food treats than using a lure when training your dog.

Last, but not the least, if you want to get your dog to obey your commands, you should use a marker system. This method is known as a marker system, and involves less punishment, which reduces the likelihood of conflict with your dog. As the name implies, marker exercises allow you to train individual parts of your dog, and then link these parts to create the final exercise. The goal of a shaped exercise is to encourage your dog to exhibit behavior that closely resembles the final behavior. This includes rewarded steps, and looking at something to get a treat.
